One of the least appreciated and underrated traditions at camp happens on the last night of the summer. Following the award ceremony and closing video of the summer, everyone from the campers to the counselors and administration walks down to the waterfront where we sit in the bleachers on the lake. Blue Ridge, girls’ side of camp, goes down to their bleachers at the opposite side of the lake as well. We sit there as a lifeguard lights up the back of the boat. What do we see? We see the year of the summer, for example “2010”, on fire. The boat circles the lake while two representatives of every bunk give their remarks and gratitude for those involved in making their summer special. Even though to many this is an insignificant tradition, to me, it is an extremely powerful, priceless, and intimate one. It is a time to reflect and appreciate; to reflect on the great summer and to appreciate those at camp who made it that way as well as your parents who gave you the opportunity to be apart of Equinunk. It is a very somber, emotional, and reflective way to end the passing of the summer.
